What is the difference between the installation of a metal door in a wooden house from its installation in a stone structure? The first and most significant difference is the material of the opening. The whole process depends largely on it directly. Therefore, an iron door to a wooden house is installed only when the properties of wood are studied.
The specifics of mounting an iron door in a wooden house
When installing the product yourself, you need to be extremely careful, since even an insignificant slip will cause a lot of trouble. Wood is a rather moody material. And wooden buildings have a number of features that can not be ignored when installing a steel structure:
- Shrink probability. Wooden log houses within five years after construction change their geometric parameters. As a result of shrinkage, window and door openings warp. For this reason, experts advise installing the front door at least a year after the construction of the house from a beam or log.
- Risk of loose attachment. To install the door, anchors are used to fasten the structure. When driving them, it is necessary to correctly calculate the angle of installation of the bolts. This will prevent splitting of the wood and loosening of the fasteners. Particular attention should be paid to the size of the bolts. It is not recommended to drive a pin longer than 15 cm into the beam.
- Strength. In buildings of this type, the most durable are blind walls. As for the boards along the window and doorways, they are much weaker. As a rule, thieves take advantage of this shortcoming and penetrate the house by making a passage to bypass the door device.
When installing a metal door in a wooden house, it is important to consider all these nuances in order to prevent deformation and breakage of the structure.
Tool List
Taking into account the technological characteristics of the building material, for work you will need a set of tools:
- level;
- medium in size scrap;
- nail clipper;
- hacksaw or chainsaw;
- chisel;
- anchors;
- foam for installation.
Installation Instructions
Installation of the product involves a clear sequence of actions. A step-by-step instruction will allow you to get a general picture of the entire amount of work and not to go astray. Installing a metal door consists of four stages.
Aperture preparation
The locations of the openings in the building are provided by the project. They are made at the construction stage or cut out with a chainsaw after the construction of the house.
The width of the opening should be 150 mm greater than what the door structure requires. This is necessary to install a casing with a width of 65 mm. Above it is also necessary to leave a gap of 15 cm, which over time will be closed by the settled crowns.
When replacing the old frame door, the preparation of the opening begins with its dismantling. To disassemble the design is not difficult. To do this, you need:
- Remove the canvas. If it was held on collapsible hinges, then open the door and lift it with a crowbar. If the hinges were not separable, use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws that hold the sash in the box.
- The easiest way to disassemble a wooden box with your own hands. To do this, unscrew all the fasteners or saw the racks on the sides and tear them off with a crowbar. The metal box is usually sawn off by a grinder.
- Clean the opening from worn insulation, remaining fasteners, pieces of plaster.
Assembly and installation of casing
A box or casing is called a bar along the perimeter of the opening, which form a rigid base for fastening the door. It does not prevent the shrinkage of the wooden structure, but protects the openings from distortions that appear under the influence of the settling crowns. When installing the casing at the ends of the opening, a groove is made by the milling cutter.
Then a bar is inserted into it. It is also called the slide bar, along which the entire house settles. The contours of the opening remain unchanged.
Other casing designs that perform exactly the same function are also possible. The choice of type of compound is a matter of taste.
A transverse rail is installed at the top, and a soft insulation is placed in the gap. The bars on the sides are built up with boards, the width of which is equal to the width of the end. As a result of these actions, a draft box is obtained, to which an iron door will be fixed.
Box and web installation
For buildings made of wood, frames with a high degree of rigidity are usually chosen. As a rule, this is a welded mechanism made of sheet material with a thickness of at least 2 mm.
The steel frame is installed only when the diagonals of the pigtails match. If this does not happen, the casing will need to be corrected. Otherwise, the metal frame will become uneven, which will lead to the destruction of the casing.
Before you insert the frame of the entrance door into the opening, it should be insulated with mineral wool and thus seal the joints. Often there are products with an insulated box. In this case, no additional manipulations are required before installation.
After you have managed to put the iron box in the opening, align it and fix it. To ensure that the load is evenly distributed over the entire wall, it is recommended to increase the number of fixing points.
The length of the anchors should not be greater than the thickness of the carriages. The fastening elements are staggered so that they go into the carriage from two sides of the ridge.
The next step is hanging the sash. In iron doors, 2 fasteners are used:
- Welded outer hinges. To put on the canvas, you need to lift it and put the upper part of the loop on the pin. Such a mount is considered unreliable, since the hinges are easily cut.
- Hidden loops. They are inserted into the sash, loot and are considered burglar resistant. To make the installation, you will need a hex key with which the hardware elements are twisted.
The correctness of the door hinge is checked by opening and closing it.
Filling slots with foam
At the end of the installation, it is necessary to foam the slots around the iron box. If you do not want traces of foam to remain on the frame, paste over its edges with masking tape.
After solidification of the mounting foam, its excess is removed. As a decor, the metal door is framed by platbands. The patch strips are not attached to the wall, but to the steel box.
