Most often, the thickness of the foundation is taken more than the thickness of the building envelope. This is necessary to ensure load bearing capacity. At the junction of the base and the wall, water may linger, which will damage the structure. To prevent this, ebbs are installed to protect the basement base. Any building material does not withstand constant exposure to moisture and freezing temperatures, therefore, in order to maintain the foundation for many years, installation of ebbs is necessary.
Product selection
When choosing items for the home when installing with your own hands, you need to pay attention to the following criteria:
- material of manufacture;
- sizes
- appearance.
Dimensions are selected depending on the width of the protruding part of the cap. In addition to the functional purpose, the installation of elements has a decorative function, if you make too protruding tide, the facade of the house will not look very good. The optimum overhang of the metal strip is taken to be 50 mm. The size range offers products with a width of 50 to 400 mm, which allows installation for any protrusion of the base.
Low tides for the foundation should be in harmony with the facade of the building and its finishing materials. Elements for the basement of the house are selected depending on the color scheme of the facade and the preferences of the future owner. If this is not done, they will stand out from the big picture.
Another important factor is the ebb material. Here we can distinguish the following classification:
- metal;
- polymer.
Base metal elements
Installation of these products for the basement will allow to obtain high performance characteristics. Do-it-yourself installation of metal castings allows you to ensure a long service life, resistance to any weather conditions (due to the polymer coating), low cost. Such elements can be made according to the size of the customer. It can be painted or left without finishing.
Metal strips for water drainage can be made of the following materials:
- galvanized and stainless steel (the most common option);
- aluminum;
- copper.
Plastic ebbs
The advantages of plastic elements for the basement of the house include:
- easy installation with your own hands, does not require special training or specific skills;
- no noise during rain;
- long service life;
- resistance to fading by ultraviolet radiation;
- light weight.
The choice for a wooden house
Particularly careful selection requires installation for a house made of wood. This material is susceptible to decay and damage by mold and fungus when exposed to moisture. It is best to opt for metal products that provide better protection.
If there is a need to perform the facade of the building in a special style, you can resort to the use of wood tides. Such material will be very difficult to operate, since it will require periodic impregnation with water-repellent compounds.
If you do not take the protective measures on time, the tree will cease to fulfill its functions, which can lead to damage to the foundation of the house.
Mounting technology
Making ebbs on your own is a feasible task. Installation is carried out between the facing of the base and the walls. Check the horizontality of the base with a building level. If there are strong skews, it is required to level the base with cement-sand mortar. Further installation is carried out in the following order:
- Perform markup. Between the two corners with the help of screws, a cord is pulled, which will serve as a marking for applying the solution in the manufacture of slopes.
- Prepare a solution for the manufacture of slopes. For preparation, one part of cement and 3 parts of sand are used. The amount of water is calculated so that the mixture does not drain off the trowel.
- Slopes are made on the lace. To do this, you need a trowel. The minimum angle of inclination is 15 degrees.
- After completion of work, it is necessary to let the cement gain strength. The waiting time depends on the ambient temperature. At an average daily temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, 1-2 days is enough, if the weather is cool, it may take a longer amount of time.
- The next step is determined depending on the method of fixing the tides. If you plan to fix them directly to the wall, preparatory work is not required.
- If it is decided to fix the ebbs to the frame of the outer wall cladding, then you must first install its guides.
- The tides are fixed to the guides on self-tapping screws. Fastening to the wall is carried out using dowels-nails.
- The connection of the ebb strip along the length is performed with an overlap of at least 30 mm. The joints are treated with sealant.
- After fixing the linear sections proceed to the corners of the building. The fastening is carried out in the same way. Trims for corners are made from the remains of a linear strip. To do this, the material is bent and the necessary undercuts are made to simplify bending and improve fit. For cutting metal, it is necessary to prepare special scissors.
- Complete the process with a sealant treatment. They need to grease the junction of the wall and low tide, fasteners.
Important! If you plan to install wide ebbs, then to increase their strength they are mounted on brackets. This allows the structure to withstand wind loads.
In addition to the length of the base, ebbs must be installed on the windows. After completion of work, proceed to the exterior decoration of the building.
Elements serve as additional waterproofing of the foundation structure. It is important to protect the basement from water as much as possible, since its destruction will lead to disastrous consequences for the entire building. Low tide - this is the topmost part of the foundation waterproofing, which diverts rainwater from the protruding surface. Next, a blind area is included in the process, which leads water to the ground at a distance from the base of the building. And the last reliable barrier to water becomes a vertical coating or roll waterproofing.
