I want to share one of my experiences. Bad experience. Should I use the bow from the store to land? I have never had such a question before. I grow onions every year. Always planted onion sets. I got a good crop, although, you know, you do not have to year after year. I plant a lot of onions, although I live now alone and my “many” differs significantly from “many” for a large family. Usually I share the harvest with neighbors, acquaintances, and therefore I plant "with a margin."
I used to grow onion sets myself, but recently I often order them either in stores or from private sellers via the Internet, or buy in seed stores. This year is no exception, ordered in different places. But, "pulled me hard" this year to buy some more onions for planting in the vegetable department of the Lenta supermarket. He really liked me externally. Large elongated bulbs, similar in appearance to our shrew or shallots, but 3-4 times larger in size than those that I usually plant. Variety names, of course, are not written in such stores, only the price. The price for this onion was significantly higher than for ordinary onions. This also played a role. Darling, then good.
I bought about a kilogram of this onion - that's 12-13 bulbs. I decided that I won’t eat it. I will plant and propagate this shallot for the future.
It so happened that almost simultaneously I received a parcel with seeds from Sochi from a private seller. Among the seeds were the bulbs of the Banana variety. Golden giant. The bulbs of this variety were very similar in appearance to the ones I bought. The set included only 6 bulbs. Not much ... But, as I said, the bulbs are very large. I ordered only one set, the weight of which was 0.5 kg. These 6 bulbs pulled a pound.
I was even happy for myself. Like, the harvest will be much larger and I can quickly multiply such a wonderful large shallot. I planted onions from the store and onions from the parcel on the same day at the end of February (sorry, I did not write down the date). Specially planted them nearby. What did you get in the end? You can see my result in the photo.
In the foreground photo, on the left is the common shallot, in the center is the shallot from the parcel - Banana variety Golden giant. And then in the picture behind him you see an empty spot in the garden. It was at this place that the shallots bought in the Ribbon were supposed to rise.
Thus, the onion from the parcel safely ascended and grows. It is much larger than normal. True, only 5 out of 6 bulbs grow. Someone has become too drunk on this onion and pulled one onion from the garden. I found only the husk from her. Either the pheasant was joking, or the hamster. A lot of this living creature divorced in our summer cottage surroundings. Pheasants calmly proudly walk in the beds. This year I noticed that they willingly “walk” on my potatoes. I read that they eat Colorado beetles well. That they would have cleaned my garden of this byaka!
But the hamsters in the garden - this is a real disaster. Last year, they greatly patted my nerves - "cut" almost half of the green onions. Onions after such a haircut did not continue to grow. The bulbs did not form and I harvested much less than I expected.
I suspect that it was hamsters last year that robbed me of carrots. They ate all the greens of carrots after I thinned it and freed it from weeds. Having done such laborious work (thinning and weeding of carrot seedlings), I was horrified the next day to find that not a single plant was left on the bed. But then I still did not understand who was responsible for my misfortune. Hamsters didn’t come across my eyes. And this year, they generally ceased to be afraid of me and I finally noticed them.
This year, hamsters robbed me of parsley. Only in the middle of May I plucked a modest bunch for a salad.
So, parsley began to grow only after I got rid of a whole family of hamsters that settled for the winter under the floor of my shed to store garden equipment.
Here, we, gardeners, have to deal with such difficulties. Such problems have to be addressed.
But back to our bow. The one that was purchased in the Tape still sticks out in the ground. It does not rot, does not fade, but it is not going to grow. But it has been more than one month after landing.
I pulled one of the bulbs from the ground and the photo shows that there are not even roots on it, they did not grow. The bulb is dense, with no signs of illness, but without roots.
Like this. Most likely, onion producers before the sale processed the onions with something, so that they retain their presentation and longer sprout. Until I left this bow in the ground. There is something I will not be. What if he thinks and begins to grow ...
The only conclusion I can make is not to buy onions for planting in vegetable stores. True, I don’t know if such an onion is good for food ...
